Pacific Northwest Ballet's History

Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) is one of America’s premier ballet companies, renowned for its innovative programming, world-class dancers, and strong community involvement. Founded in 1972, PNB has grown from a small regional company to an internationally recognized organization that performs in Seattle’s McCaw Hall and tours extensively throughout the United States and abroad.

PNB’s early years were marked by financial struggles and artistic challenges. The company was founded by Francia Russell and Kent Stowell, former dancers with the New York City Ballet, who were recruited by Seattle arts patroness Kayla Skinner to establish a ballet company in the Pacific Northwest. The first PNB performance took place on April 14, 1972, at the Cornish Playhouse in Seattle, with a program that included Balanchine’s Serenade and Stowell’s version of Coppélia.

Despite critical acclaim for its early productions, PNB struggled to find an audience and secure funding. Skinner’s support was crucial to keeping the company afloat during its first few years, but the founding directors realized they needed to broaden their base of support if PNB was to survive and thrive. In 1976, they launched a major fundraising campaign that netted $1.2 million, enabling PNB to move into a new facility, the Seattle Center Opera House (now McCaw Hall), and establish a school to train local dancers.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, PNB expanded its repertoire and attracted top-tier dancers from around the world. The company developed a distinctive style that blended the lyricism of the Russian school with the speed and precision of the Balanchine style. PNB also became known for its commitment to new works, commissioning pieces by leading contemporary choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, and Mark Morris.

In recent years, PNB has continued to innovate and expand, collaborating with other arts organizations and experimenting with new performance formats. In 2016, the company launched its “Director’s Choice” series, which showcases new works by emerging choreographers alongside classic pieces from the repertoire. PNB also partners with local musicians and visual artists to create multimedia productions that blur the boundaries between dance and other art forms.

For audiences interested in attending PNB performances, there are a variety of ticket options available. Single tickets for individual performances can be purchased online or by phone, with prices ranging from $30 to $190 depending on the seating section and performance date. PNB also offers subscription packages that provide discounted tickets to multiple shows, as well as special events and benefits for subscribers. Students, seniors, and military personnel can also receive discounted tickets with valid ID.

In addition to its mainstage performances, PNB offers a range of educational and community outreach programs. The company’s School of Ballet provides training for students of all ages and levels, from preschoolers to pre-professional dancers. PNB also hosts open rehearsals, school matinees, and workshops that offer behind-the-scenes access to the company’s dancers and creative teams.

Overall, Pacific Northwest Ballet is a dynamic and innovative organization that has played a vital role in the cultural life of Seattle and the wider dance world for nearly fifty years. Whether you’re a longtime fan of ballet or a newcomer to the art form, PNB’s performances and educational programs offer something to inspire and delight everyone.

More About Pacific Northwest Ballet

One of PNB’s most popular live songs is “The Nutcracker Suite” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This iconic ballet tells the story of a young girl, Clara, and her adventures with a magical nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve. Tchaikovsky’s score embodies the joy, wonder, and excitement of the holiday season, making it a timeless classic that is beloved by audiences of all ages. This charming masterpiece has been a holiday tradition for generations, and PNB’s live performances of “The Nutcracker Suite” are always in high demand.

Another popular live song in PNB’s repertoire is “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky. This ballet is a tragic love story that revolves around the beautiful princess Odette, who has been cursed by an evil sorcerer and can only transform into a swan at night. The breathtaking score perfectly captures the emotional turmoil of the characters and the grandeur of the story. PNB has performed “Swan Lake” numerous times, and each time, the audience is left spellbound by the dancers’ graceful movements and the music’s haunting melody.

PNB’s diverse repertoire also includes modern works with an eclectic mix of styles and genres. For instance, “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff is a contemporary ballet that features a series of interconnected vignettes set to Orff’s powerful and energetic music. This piece incorporates elements of modern dance and showcases PNB’s versatility as a company. The combination of the dance and the music creates a visceral and unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.

In addition to these popular live songs, PNB also collaborates with renowned musicians and artists to create unique and innovative performances. For example, “Love & Ballet” is a program that features a collection of contemporary works that explore the complexities of love and relationships. This program includes a live performance by the Seattle-based indie pop band, Hey Marseilles, and is a perfect example of how PNB strives to push the boundaries of traditional ballet and create new and exciting experiences for its audience.

PNB’s live performances are a must-see for anyone who appreciates the beauty and artistry of ballet. From the classic works of Tchaikovsky to the contemporary pieces of today, PNB’s repertoire features some of the most captivating and beloved live songs in the world of dance. Attending a live performance is an experience like no other, and PNB’s commitment to excellence and innovation ensures that each show is unique and unforgettable.

If you are interested in attending a Pacific Northwest Ballet performance, tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. PNB offers a range of ticket options to fit your budget, including season subscriptions, group rates, and student discounts.
